For the Love of St. Maarten
by Will Johnson

DEDICATION

To the children of St. Maarten who, white looking to the future for their survival, should learn the lessons of the past so as to be better equipped for the future.

The Author

PREFACE
We hope that they may be inspired by the lives of their ancestors and
compatriots, and that through knowledge of the past they may liberate their
minds and find ways to assure their children of their rightful inheritance.
Our only wish is that this little book will contribute to the preservation of
memories of a St. Maarten we all knew and loved.

Will Johnson:
"I got to know St. Maarten intimately in the nineteen fifties and already
people were talking with nostalgia about the van Romondt family and a bygone
era. By the time I started working in St. Maarten in 1960 the van Romondt's
had disappeared from the scene. I became curious as to why this family which
had dominated the St. Maarten daily life for 150 years had disappeared so
completely. There was not one person on the island who still bore the name,
nor was there even as much as one square foot of land owned by the descendants
of that family which had once owned most of St. Maarten. It still fascinates
me how this family could have disappeared so swiftly and so completely from
the St. Maarten scene."

How do we thank Will Johnson for this wonderful book he wrote in 1978 about Sint Maarten N.A. In the book you can read about the history of the island, Philipsburg, The van Romondt Family, The old guest house, The sons of soils, Development of SXM and view many pictures.

The book For The Love of Sint Maarten N.A. is among one of the most valuable literature which has been the guideline to the VR-Family Tree Research Project.

As we continue the VR-Family Tree Research Project we will continuously highlight many topics as written in several books regarding the history of the van Romondt Family & the many VR-descendants and keep you updated.

If you have any literature that can be of great value to the research please let us know.

Mr. Will Johnson has been a great support to the VR-research and is scheduled as one of the guest speakers at the upcoming VR-Reunion in Sint Maarten N.A.
